In response to Alabama’s ongoing severe weather, lawmakers say they want to establish a statewide emergency notification system.
A bill for the creation of the system got passed in 2020, so all the state needs now is funding.
Alabama Sen. Jabo Wagoner said he expects lawmakers to look at the issue as they debate approval of the 2021 budet. Countywide or citywide emergency notifications are already up and running around the state, including Tuscaloosa city and county, Jefferson County and Shelby county.
Cullman County Emergency Management Director Phyllis Little said installing notification software is an expensive endeavor, especially for smaller counties lacking funding.
